10 Tips for Keeping Your Family and House Safe From Coronavirus

You and your family are spending a lot more time at home these days thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic. But you still have to go out at times, and you can't help but to wonder how you'll keep your family safe in the process.

The reality is, even though COVID-19 is very contagious, you have the power to protect your family and your house safe during the coronavirus outbreak.

Here's a rundown on 10 tips for keeping your household healthy from coronavirus this spring.

Let's dig in!

1. Embrace Hand Washing and Hand Sanitiser

One of the best moves you can make to protect your family from the coronavirus is to wash your hands.

As a general rule of thumb, it's critical that you use warm water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds. The combination of water and soap is effective against the coronavirus.

Twenty seconds might seem like a long time, but if you're taking your time and not rushing, the time will pass quite quickly. Singing the happy birthday tune two times while you're washing your hands will help to ensure that you are scrubbing your hands for a long enough period.

In addition, to washing your hands, be sure to sanitise your hands with an alcohol hand sanitiser. Ethanol, for instance, has been found to be effective against the novel coronavirus.

2. Sanitise Your Surfaces, and Clean Objects

Keeping the surfaces and objects in your home sanitised is also crucial for preventing your family from contracting the coronavirus.

You should frequently sterilise your surfaces and tools in the home using diluted chlorine. In addition, use alcoholic wipes to clean your smartphone and any other devices you constantly use. Likewise, wipe down any items you buy from the store before you use them.

Cleaning is so important because it removes germs and grime from surfaces. Also, even though it doesn't kill viruses, it does lower their numbers.

When it comes to vegetables and fruits, be sure to also clean their surfaces before you consume them. Wash them with vinegar and water, then leave them marinating in water and vinegar for 15 minutes. This will help to make sure that they are completely sterilised and clean.

3. Declutter Your Spaces and Wardrobes

Another smart way to keep your house safe during the coronavirus pandemic is to start decluttering your wardrobes and spaces around the house. After all, the fewer items you have, the less you have to clean. As a result, it will be easier for you to keep your house clean.

To declutter a space effectively, you'll first want to empty the space. Then, sort the items there into categories.

For instance, if you're decluttering your junk drawer, sort the staplers and pencils. Then, remove any food items in it, and decide if there is a better place to put them.

Also, when it comes to electronics, consider placing a cover on them that is wipeable. Then, clean the cover with an alcohol-based wipe regularly.

4. Maintain a Healthy Diet

You can also protect your family from COVID-19 by encouraging your family members to eat nutritious foods.

Try to stick with foods with large amounts of zinc and vitamin C. These include beans, nuts, strawberries, oranges, and kiwis, for example. These foods increase your immunity and thus boost your immune system's effectiveness.

5. Engage in Physical Activity

Staying active is another way to protect your household from COVID-19. Here's way.

Exercise has been shown to increase your body's production of extracellular superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant that also goes by the name of EcSOD. This antioxidant protects your body against a variety of diseases, including lung disease.

Specifically, EcSOD can protect you from acute respiratory distress syndrome, also called ARDS. ARDS impacts the majority of intensive care unit patients who have contracted the coronavirus.

6. Remain at Home

Yet another way you can protect your family from COVID-19 is to simply stay home. Not only does staying home protect you from contracting the coronavirus but also it helps prevent the virus's spread.

You may be tempted to maintain the plans you created before the coronavirus outbreak. Or, maybe you're tired of being at home and want to go shopping to entertain yourself and your family. But don't.

Instead, stay out of public areas as much as you can. And if you do have to go to the store, shop efficiently and swiftly.

Now is not the time to simply browse aisles in an effort to kill time. It's critical that you find alternative ways to entertain the family at home, like doing crafts or other hands-on projects.

7. Engage in Social Distancing

If you do have to go into public spaces during the pandemic, make sure that you also remain six feet away from other people as well. This includes when you are taking walks or waiting to check out your groceries.

Also, try to avoid seeing family members and friends who don't live in your home with you.

The more you keep a boundary between your family and other individuals, the less likely you are to contract COVID-19.

8. Quit Touching Your Face, and Stop Using Your Fingertips When Possible

During the coronavirus pandemic, it's paramount that you get in the habit of not touching your nose, mouth, or eyes unless you've completely sanitised your hands.

Also, try to avoid using your fingertips to complete tasks when you're in public.

For instance, use your knuckles instead to open doors, push buttons, pull levers, or sign for items digitally. Or, use your wrist or elbow to turn on a light or the faucet of a sink.

You can even wrap your jacket or sweater sleeve around a door handle to avoid touching the handle. Then, simply wash that clothing item as soon as you get home. This is especially important if your chance of touching a food item or your face while you're running errands is high.

Note that many buildings today have doors with automatic sensors to accommodate individuals with mobility issues. So, look around the doors of buildings to see if any are present before you start to grab the door handles.

Also, many buildings feature accessibility buttons that make opening doors easier. When you run across these buttons, simply touch them with your foot, hip, or forearm. The doors should open within a few seconds.

9. Put on a Mask As Needed

Wearing a mask also offers benefits when it comes to protecting you and your family against the coronavirus.

Specifically, masks prevent the majority of droplets and particles from going into your nose and mouth. In addition, if you are unknowingly infected, a mask will keep you from inadvertently spreading the coronavirus.

In general, you should put on your mask prior to leaving the house. Then, dispose of the mask once you get back home.

In some places of business, masks have become mandatory. Likewise, in some locales, masks are necessary if you are gathering around other individuals.

However, you don't necessarily need a mask if you are by yourself in your motor vehicle. Likewise, you don't need a mask if you are at least six feet away from other people.

Still, you should always keep a mask on hand in the event that you end up needing to go around people. And having a mask on will help you to avoid unwanted lectures or side eyes from strangers when you are out in public.

10. Wear Gloves the Right Way

Finally, consider wearing disposable gloves prior to touching anything that is unsanitised, particularly money.

After you have finished using your gloves, make sure that you remove your gloves from your wrist, not your fingers. Afterward, dispose of the gloves in a trash bin or recycling bin that is tightly closed. Then, be sure to sanitise your hands afterward.
