How can I keep my skin healthy when using face masks?

Wearing face masks every day has become the norm for many of us. They are a vital part of fighting infections like COVID-19 because they stop droplets from spreading. This means that we will probably have to continue wearing them for a while.

But for some people, wearing face masks means maskne – skin conditions triggered by wearing a mask.

In this article, we’re going to look at how to keep your skin healthy when using face masks. Our simple tips will help keep your skin in great condition and make your everyday experience more comfortable.

What skin conditions can wearing a mask cause?

“Maskne” is a way of describing any skin condition caused or made worse by wearing a face mask. These conditions include:

  • Acne – Acne is caused by your pores getting clogged. It can lead to blackheads, whiteheads and pimples that can become very sore.
  • Rosacea – This is when the skin takes on a red appearance and can include pimples. Wearing a mask can make it worse.
  • Contact dermatitis – If you are allergic to your mask material, you may develop this condition, which can cause blisters and a rash.
  • Folliculitis – Folliculitis is when your hair follicles get infected and bumps appear on your skin.

There are various ways you can prevent these types of problems. Let’s take a look at what they are.

Choose fabric face masks

Choosing a soft fabric face mask helps reduce the friction that can irritate your skin. Go for a natural material like cotton for the inner layer that rests against your skin. It will be less likely to irritate you and will allow your skin to breathe.

Remember to wash your fabric masks regularly and avoid using strongly scented detergents. Ensure they are completely dry before storing or wearing them. You can keep them in a clean bag when you’re not wearing them.

Change disposable face masks regularly

If you opt for disposable face masks, make sure you change them regularly. They should only be worn once in total, so don’t be tempted to save a mask that looks clean for the next day. Face masks accumulate dirt and germs that you can’t see, which will irritate your skin.

Ideally, you should change your disposable face mask several times a day. And you must dispose of it properly. Put it in a sealed bag and into a bin with a closed lid and foot pedal so you don’t need to touch it. Don’t forget to wash your hands after touching a used mask. You can also use hand sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available.

You can also give your skin a break by taking your mask off for 15 minutes every four hours.

Make sure your face mask is a good fit

If your face mask doesn’t fit well, it can cause irritation to your skin. It should cover your mouth and nose without gaping to ensure it’s safe. And to prevent it from chafing against your skin, it should not be too tight.

If it’s too big, you can tie a knot in each of the ear loops to tighten it. Or if it’s too small, you can tie a piece of string or cord to each ear loop. Then tie the ends of the strings together at the back of your head.

Get into a good skincare routine

Getting into a good skincare routine when you have to wear a face mask helps prevent maskne and other issues. Skincare for dry sensitive skin is especially important, particularly if you already suffer from a condition like eczema.

Choose a mild cleanser to wash your face morning and night. And be sure to moisturise after cleansing with a low-allergy lotion or cream. You could also use a barrier cream on your skin before putting on your mask to prevent irritation.

It’s also a good idea to wash your face after you take your mask off and apply moisturiser or barrier cream.

Try going makeup-free, at least on the lower part of your face, when you are wearing your face mask. Cosmetics can clog pores, which can lead to skin irritation and make maskne and other conditions worse.
